13th Anniversary of OK Computer?

So it doesn’t really make sense to celebrate the 13th anniversary of anything. I’m making an exception since I was late to the tribute party that Stereogum put together 3 years ago celebrating the 10th Anniversary of Radiohead’s OK Computer. They released a tribute album (which is a free download) with a fistful of great artists. Read the full article by Stereogum here.

Its not just good music; it’s free music.

Last month I went back in time. I attended the WFMU Record Fair in NYC and walked away with a bag full of bottleneck blues, indie rock, and a couple of KEXP live recordings (essentially more indie rock). There were duck butt hairstyles, bell-bottoms,  elvis look alikes and other people who just smelled really old. It was at the second to last table where I found two Live at KEXP albums. Having been recently introduced to KEXP I’m blown away by the amount of live recordings they’ve amassed over the years.

The two records, volumes three and four, contain artists such as: The Shins, The Long Winters, Ghostland Observatory, Hot Chip, Peter Bjorn and John, Grizzly Bear, Beirut, The National, Vampire Weekend, Fleet Foxes, Rufus Wainwright and plenty more. Pretty much all your standard Pitchfork favorites have at one point or another swung by the Seattle based radio station to play a few tunes. What’s even more impressive is that KEXP is part of the Free Music Archive which feels like a live recording version of Napster for indie music. There’s also a feed for the live recordings which a friend of mine recently passed along.

I’m glad I purchased the records even though they won’t directly benefit KEXP. At least I know better for next time they’re selling the LPs. Check out a mix from KEXP:

Trains Passing in the Night

A blog is a terrible thing to waste.

Not exactly. Blogs are like stars (in the solar system). When they are born it is something great and they burn bright. When they die they are still visible but lack any of the original impact or energy they once held. Hopefully that makes sense to someone out there. It’s an unnecessary analogy and I probably should avoid speaking on subjects that I’m not all that familiar with. But isn’t that what having your own blog allows you to do in the first place?

I’ve neglected this ol’ blog of mine for the entire summer. It’s akin to a tree falling in the woods and no one being there to hear if it made a sound or not. I have no idea whether it was missed. I sincerely doubt it deserved to be. With that said take this statement as a warning. Updating this blog is a promise I intend to break. I apologize for the occasional online diary-like posts.

A splinter, a flea and a temporary home

Road trips hold so much promise and rarely do they turn out the way you expected them to. Some open your eyes to the actual beauty and scale of this country. Others create bonds of friendship that can never be broken. Or in my case it leaves you wondering.

Sometime last week I made plans to go on a short road trip with a friend of mine, Angelia, who needed to find a place to live in New Paltz, NY where she will be pursuing her masters degree in art. We hadn’t caught up in a good while so I agreed without hesitation. She picked me up in her 98′ Jeep and our greeting quickly morphed into a warning. “The AC is broken. Sorry.” No biggie. My wrangler doesn’t have air conditioning either, but I’m usually only on the road for ten minutes with the front windows down and the rest unzipped to create the cool canopy effect. The lack of cool air both inside and out took its toll on the two of us as we sat on the New York State Thruway for a good two hours of bumper-to-bumper preview of hell on a highway.

After finally arriving in New Paltz I unstuck my t-shirt from my back and took a look around. “What a great little hippie town.” We took a tour of the first room for rent and left feeling a lack of excitement. “The second place is going to be much better. I have a gut feeling”, Angelia proclaimed. Anytime anyone says they have a ‘feeling’ about something I usually respond in my head, “Oh good for you”, and knowing my friend I just let it roll of my sweaty back. After a couple of cold beers at the local watering hole we felt alive again and decided to check out the local art supply stores. We quickly split up inside the shop and by the time I found Angelia in the paint aisle she had kicked up the only splinter from the store’s ancient floorboards.

Sometimes you just shouldn’t wear flip flops. This was definitely one of those times. The splinter was a good eight inches long and it sure left its mark on her big toe. That was our sign to leave. A few words with the owner, a bit of tape, a free sample product later and we were on our way to the next room for rent. Remember that ‘gut feeling’ that she had? It wound up being a washed up artist/mom who was mowing the lawn, a German Shepherd, and a six year old who made me believe in ADD. Oh, if only I had stayed in the car.

The last tenant had moved in with her boyfriend(I like to think of it more as her escape) and decided to stop paying rent. That was the first sign of trouble. The second was the fact that every inch of the room this young runaway once kept was covered in this runaway’s underwear. After I discovered the month old cup of hot chocolate left sitting on the dresser we both agreed this place would never be called home. The over friendly German Shepherd had warmed up to me because I seemed to be the only one giving the dog any attention. And by ‘warmed up to me’ I really mean it had shared one of its fleas with me which I felt crawling through my leg hair. Turns out Angelia is extremely allergic to fleas. ‘Check Please!’ Not that we needed another reason to say the hell with this dump, but finding the flea, allergy or no allergy, was enough to make that first place look like a 5-star hotel.

My neglected reading/writing

Up until now, I’ve left my personal life out of my blog.  Well, no more!  It’s not like this is my ‘online journal’, so it’s not a big deal that I haven’t written about myself.  Plus most of the comments I get on this thing are from bots or automated remarks from wholesalecoolsunglasses.com or registrycleaner.at and guccihandbags.net.  I would crank the spam filter up to max, but I like the minimal attention it provides.

Anyways, this post is supposed to be about the state of my reading & writing.  They’re both in peril at the moment.  Stacks of books have been organized and shelved.  My Believer magazines are lucky if they make it out of the plastic packaging.  My bookmarks are all unemployed and I have even ceased to post on my blog.  So I decided to write about not writing anymore.  Its akin to making a movie about making a movie.  Just something you do when you’ve run out of ideas.

Mostly I blame Red Dead Redemption which has sucked my free time as dry as the desert I ride through now that I’ve made it to Mexico(in the video game, not real life).  I’ve often stared at my Ikea bookshelf hoping that one of the novels would jump out at me proclaiming their love to be read.  They don’t.  The books have caught the same lazy fever as I have.

To change course I tore the plastic off the June issue of my Believer and opened up to the Nick Hornby column.  Bad choice.  This guy reads anywhere from 4-6 books every month and still has time to write about all of them in detail.  I got about 40 words in and gave up feeling trumped by this bookworm.  It’s as if I wanted to start working out again, sat down on the bike machine and Lance Armstrong was next to me sweating purple Gatorade.  I’m not inspired by that, I’m defeated!

At least not reading gave me something to write about.
